2014 Pinnacle Award Winner – Best Remodeling Project over $500,000
This home was designed by Chapman Design Group, Inc. and built by Icon Construction of South Carolina, LLC. Chapman is a licensed architect and a Certified SC Master Builder.
This project starts with a new driveway approach meandering through the thick buffer of trees until you reach the clearing which allows you to circle around a multi tiered fountain on axis with the front entry or branch off to a private garage space on either side of the home.
The renovation was of a mid 1980′s eclectic salt-box style home that was developed into a more colonial style home. The original home contained 3500 square feet on two levels. Now, it is completely renovated with an additional living area of 3000 square feet for a combined square footage of 6500 all of which now has an Energy Star certification of 5 stars.
These exterior changes to the home include enclosing the front & rear porches to be included in the interior living space, replacing the original windows, replacing vinyl siding with fiber cement siding, and creating a new covered front entry with symmetrical curving stairs with wrought iron railings. A new driveway was developed on axis with the new front entry along with a circular drive around a new multi tiered fountain.
The existing main home was completely renovated to reflect a more modern lifestyle. The original Dining Room in the front of the home was increased in size by taking in the square footage of the porch and was converted into a personal theater for four with oval shaped walls, custom theater seats, a fiber-optic ceiling, and an 80 inch television. The Laundry Room, also in the front of the home, was increased in size by taking in the porch and received new cabinets and finishes along with a built-in dog pen that give their pets direct access to the a secured area outside. The original screened porch across the back of the house was enclosed to create a new Dining Room, an enlarged Kitchen, and a new passageway to the addition on the left side of the home that allows for a commanding view of the beautifully landscaped pool. The Upper Level of the main house was completely renovated while the Master Bedroom Suite underwent major changes such as a new vaulted ceiling, the addition of a new private study upon entry to the suite and the sunlit Master Bathroom and walk-in-closet.
An octagonal Sunroom was added to the back of the home by a small connecting hallway to the Dining Room. The Sunroom was created to look like a gazebo as if it is floating on the water; this effect was accomplished by constructing the sunroom foundation with the pool. The dark blue finishes of the pool help create the lagoon feel and incorporates a negative edge on the opposite side to allow open views of the pasture. There is a natural stone waterfall on one side of the pool and a shallow area on the opposite side for lounge chairs along with a hot tub that spills into the pool. The coping around the pool is natural shaped stone with the patio containing the same stone. The use zoysia grass for grouting the patio pavers and the use of strategically placed boulders around the pool and landscaping accomplishes the owner’s goal of a natural setting. Color changing LED Laminar Jets shoot water into the pool to add to the running water sound of the waterfall along with four Tempest Torches placed around the pool and patio create a unique nighttime event.
And finally, a major addition was added to the left side of the home as a part-time residence for the owner’s brother. This addition utilized the same exterior proportions and finishes to blend the new with the original structure. The interior of this new addition boasts a vaulted open plan living, dining and kitchen featuring a focal point fireplace with flanking cabinets on one side and a fully appointed kitchen on the other.
The master suite enjoys a commanding view of the well-appointed pool & patio through an arched triple window located at the wall at the end of a vaulted ceiling. This suite also includes a luxurious bathroom featuring a soaking tub; a glass walled walk-in shower and a gracious closet. Other features of this addition include a guest suite with a bathroom that enjoys easy access to and from the pool. To insure a sense of privacy, a separate drive was established that leads to its own garage as well a gated brick courtyard entry.
